CHAPTER 1

It was quiet in that little patch of grass. It always was, of course.

But somehow, it seemed even more silent, as though time itself had stayed still, holding its breath.

Perhaps he was just going insane; he had been here for a long time, barely leaving the room.

He had let the rays of sunlight shine on his petals for what felt like forever, thinking about many, many things.

-

"Why would they wanna save someone as heartless as me?"

"Would I hurt anyone if I went up there?"

"Would either of them still love me if they knew who I was?"

"Can I still be good if I can love anyone?"

"Am I still... myself?"

-

These were just a few of the hundreds of questions that cycled through his head, all of which came and went, completely unanswered.

As much as he wanted those thoughts to be put to rest, he knew that it would involve going up there.

And going up there meant risking hurting everyone again. He couldn't let that happen, not again. Never, ever again.

So, he figured that staying here, in his little spot, was the best option for everyone. "Besides," he thought. "I never wanted to go to the surface anyway."

-

So, he prepared for one of his many daily naps. It was one of the only things he could really do here, as he could barely do anything else.

But, as he began to drift off, a loud, booming thump echoed from the doorway in front of him.

"Oh my god, please not this..." He groaned to himself, certain about what had happened in the room behind that opening.

The little flower hesitated to go in, but he supposed that there was no point in delaying what was inevitable, and entered the ground beneath him,

practically phasing through the soil as he searched for the room where the noise came from.

Popping out of the ground, he sighed; he was right. There was a human, lying on that same bed of golden flowers that every other human who came here fell onto.

The space between the flower and this human gradually grew smaller as the former approached the latter. As expected, the human was breathing.

In fact, they were more than alive; they were conscious. They clutched the flowers that broke their fall as they slowly rose to their feet,

hardly noticing their observer.

-

"So..." they said to themself in a quiet, yet satisfied manner. "These flowers CAN break any fall!"

The human grinned at this, revealing a small gap in their center teeth, before finally noticing that they were not alone here.

"ACK!" The human yelped, their amber eyes widened as they saw this tiny, yellow flower, bearing a simple face.

Quickly, the gathered their bearings, bending their knees to take a closer look at the creature. "O-oh wait, are you one of those monsters who live down here?"

The flower held back a scowl, trying to make a decent impression. "Oh no, I'm actually completely different, believe it or not!"

The human's smile returned, ableit in a more sheepish fashion. "Ohh, sorry. I just thought that you were one, since I've heard a lot about the monsters who live down here.

Wait, you know what a monster is, right?" It became harder to keep his annoyance from showing. "Well, why wouldn't I? I have been living down here my whole life, after all."

-

"Hm, y'know, that does make sense, actually. Say, do you have a name? Mine's Copper."

"Oh, uh, I do, actually! It's Flowey. Flowey the Flower."
